Parent Handbook
The following is an overview of the Parent Handbook. This document is based on, but does not replace, the parent handbook distributed to parents upon commencement of the classes for the year.
Program Goals
The objective of the South Winnipeg Kinderschule is to introduce three, four and five year old children to the German language in the context of a rich and varied program.
Free time play is balanced by organized activities that concentrate on the social, emotional, cognitive, and physical development of preschoolers. Learning a second language in early childhood is an exciting challenge and we hope to make it an enjoyable experience.
Time Guide
Classes starting in the morning run from 9:30 to 11:45 a.m. Children should arrive between 9:20 and 9:25 ready to begin at 9:30. Please pick up your child promptly between 11:45 and 12:00.
(There has been an interest expressed in moving these times forward 15 minutes (eg. 9:15 to 11:30). This will be discussed and agreed upon at the first AGM of the school year.)Field Trips
During the course of the year, field trips may be arranged. Parents will be informed in advance and may be asked to volunteer either as drivers and/or to help supervise. Parents are encouraged to drive their own children.
Transportation
South Winnipeg Kinderschule takes responsibility for children from the time their parents bring them into the classroom and 1118 Grosvenor until the time their parents collect them. For firled trips, parents are normally responsible for their own children; if unable to attend, they may arrange for another parent to assume their responsibility.
Program
Parents will be provided with an overview of themes, vocabulary, concepts, and activities at the beginning of each month. In addition, a monthly newsletter will aid in the communication between teachers, parents and board.
Health
1. Parents should review their child's immunization records to make sure they are up to date
2. Children with communicable diseases should be confined according to the doctor's orders. Please notify the teacher if your child has been exposed to communicable diseases such as chicken pox, measles, mumps or step throat.
3. If your child's normal play or regular activities are slowed down due to his/her not feeling well, a session should be missed.
What to bring
Since the children will be experiencing a variety of activities, we request the following:
- Dress your child in comfortable clothing which allows them to move and play without restrictions, e.g. sweat suits
- Running shoes (non-marking rubber soles) to remain at the school
- Please provide a complete change of clothing in a labeled bag also to remain at the school.
- Please ensure that all your child's garments are clearly labeled with his/her name.
Parent Participation and Snacks
As a non-profit organization, we are dependent on parental assistance in order to keep our preschool operating.
Fundraising
Fundraising is necessary for Kinderschule to operate and it helps keep the fees reasonable. Every family is encouraged to contribute of their time, energy and resources. A fundraising policy is in effect and requires a post-dated $100.00 cheque to accompany each registration. Should you choose not to participate in fundraising activities the cheque will be cashed and a tax deductible receipt issued. A fundraising/donations drop-box is located inside Kinderschule.
Parent Volunteers
Your help as a parent volunteer, who stays with the children and brings the snack, is vital to the operation of Kinderschule. A parent helper calendar will be circulated at the annual information meeting and will also be kept in the foyer on a consistent basis.
Please be prepared to sign up as a parent helper at least once every three to four weeks. Please make sure that there is enough for all the children and staff. Parents of children with a food allergy will be asked to provide snack for their children. Please ensure that snacks are nutritious. Please avoid nuts. The school will provide cups and napkins, as well as knives for slicing fruit. Parent helpers also have access to a microwave/convection oven.
Releasing Children
Children will be released ONLY to those persons authorized on the registration form. Parents are required to notify Kinderschule staff of any changes in custody and provide documentation for school files. Parents must inform the teacher if an alternate person is picking up their child prior to pick up. For safety reasons, the teachers reserve the right to ask for identification.
Fee Payment/Sessions
All registration fees and post-dated cheques must be received prior to a child attending any sessions. Post dated cheques are dated the first of each month (September to May) and are made out to South Winnipeg Kinderschule Inc.
Please do not send cash! Receipts will be issued December 31 and at the end of the school year.
