News & Events

For up-to-date calendar items, we encourage Kinderschule parents to join our online email discussion group. As for News about the current school year, we've got lots right now:

Kinderhaarschnitt Haircuts November, 2006

Isn't it about time you get your family hair cut? Everyone needs a haircut, and why not get a bargain and raise a little money for Kinderschule while you're at it! We are lucky to have two hair stylists as parents, so we're setting up for a fun day of haircuts for kids and adults for one Sunday afternoon in November. Kids cuts are just $8 and grown up cuts are $12. Please sign up for a time slot or just show up between 1 and 5 PM at Kinderschule. We're going to make it fun for the kids, with face painting, music and play opportunities.

Laternenfest November, 2006

The Laternenfest celebrations took place on November 10 at 6 PM. Please see our Laternenfest page for details on this event.

Registrations still available for this year, Tuesday playgroup starting

We still have some room for new children to join us this year. We have a new playgroup for one and two year olds starting Tuesday mornings in January, 2007. The regular program for three and four year olds runs Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings as well as an afternoon Kindergarten program which runs Wednesday afternoon as well. It is certainly not too late to enrol your children any time.

News from past years (for reference)

Alexander the Clown at Abschulußfeier
April 2006 We have booked a surprise clown for the children for our final day of classes. Alexander grew up in Germany and does a wonderful bilingual routine we're very excited to see.

Family Fun Day!
April 2006 Kinderschule participated in a very busy Family Fun Day  with a table and display. Our presence there was to let more people know what we are and attract new families to join Kinderschule.

Happy Easter!
Here is an interesting link about Easter in Germany, courtesy of the German Embassy in Ottawa. It explains many of the traditions, their origin and how they are celebrated in Germany.

Job posting for Teaching Assistant
September 2006 We are advertising for a ECE-trained teaching assistant. Please follow this link to the JOB BANK listing. Note that the content of the listing was formatted to a pre-set designation, so did not allow for a specific requirement of German language skills, except at the very bottom of the description.

Register for 2006/2007 school year
We are taking registrations for the next school year. You are always welcome to meet with us, ask questions and even make arrangements to sit in on a class and observe how a day at Kinderschule is structured. Registration forms are available here as well.

Booth at Christkindlemarkt
December 2006 Kinderschule had a booth at Christkindlemarkt. We sold Gingerbread, Stuttgart Prezels and raffeled a homemade Gingerbread house.  This helped attract visitors to our table and at the same time Kinderschule distributed a few brochures and helped spread the word about our wonderful programs.

Laternenfest a Success
November 2006 The weather was terrific for Laternenfest this year. We also were pleasantly surprised by the tremendous turnout of families both past and present for the evening. We were very pleased to see so many of those familiar faces, and we were so pleased you could come and see the new Kinderschule. We had face painting for the children, Das Bunte Fenster, craft tables and a wonderful silent auction. The food was plentiful and delicious as always and music was provided by Garry Rossol with the accordion.

Laternenfest and more!
November 2006 We now have a new Culture web page explaining the various events we host and participate in through the year. We also have a dedicated Laternenfest web page with some history, printed music and even a recording of the kids practicing with Gary Rossol on accordion! Check it out! We would like to add more details on each of our events as we go through the year, so if you have anything to add, including good links, please let us know.

New kids
It seems the word is spreading to our new neighbourhood and beyond, as we keep getting new kids enrolled into the Kinderschule program. It is remarkable how quickly the recently joined children are picking up the language skills and fitting into the group. The phone keeps ringing with expressions of interest for next year, too. We look forward to having a full group next year, and can expand to a program covering every weekday if there is sufficient demand.

Posters, Ads

[September, 2004] Posters and ads will be going out with Kinderschule parents this month to publicize our new location. There is a sign-up sheet so you can indicate which places you will take on to post the notices, with room to add any you might know.

The ads are suitable for running in typical newsletters and church bulletins, etc., in case you are involved in any such groups. You can also download the PDF file with the ads right here. Forward them to the right person or print them off for your own newsletter. The ads are available in different sizes, with both English and German versions, depending on the target audience of the publication.

Parent email group

[September, 2004] Parents and board members are encouraged to join our moderated Kinderschule email discussion group, to stay in touch with the latest news and exchange ideas. All you need to do is send an email message to kinderschule@groups.yahoo.com for an invitation to join the group. It can then be approved by a moderator and you can start to use the service. We will also be able to share photos, files and content not suitable for this public web site. Click here to learn more and join the group.

Newsletter

At Kinderschule, we stay in touch with families through a monthly newsletter which goes home with the kids. We have a new vocabulary we will be working on, as well as seasonal and other themes. Many thanks to Henry Klassen who is currently producing our monthly newsletter.
